Things Have Been Found

What I’m thinking about from time to time

Things I have been glancing over, reading, and wondering about this week:

William Lidwell- Universal Principles of Design

Alan Fletcher- The Art of Looking Sideways

Articles and Journals:

Marshall McLuhan- The Medium is the Message

J. Goody, I. Watt- The Consequences of Literacy… how has a culture of literacy changed, undermined, or improved upon a culture of orality?

D. Schmandt-Besserat- The Earliest Precursors of Writing

Walter Ong- Orality & Literacy… we’re undeniably moving back into a culture where orality lives alongside literacy via tv, radio, the internet. How is ‘secondary orality’ changing social interactions, politics, economics, and everything else?

Andre Leroi-Gourhan- Gesture & Speech, Chapter 6: Language Symbols

Other Media of note

‘Burn After Reading’- The Coen Bros. take on DC spy thrillers utilizes genre the same way films like ‘Hot Fuzz’ and ‘Shaun of the Dead’ do (and earlier Coen bros works like ‘Hudsucker Proxy’ and ‘The Man Who Wasn’t There’). I think it’s pretty successful, and I also wonder if the only difference between a Coen Bros comedy and their drama is in the comedies at least one character actually ends up getting something they wanted.
